October 2024 Alacati Windfest PWA Youth and Junior Slalom Cup
Between the 9th-13th October the next generation of racers battled it out at the Alacati Windfest PWA Youth and Junior Slalom Cup, which eventually saw plenty of racing after a less than favourable forecast at the start of the week.
On the Fin Tycho didn't have the gear for the low wind conditions the first race was started. With a 14th place in the first race and not very likely that there would be enough races for a discard, his chances to claim victory like last year were more or less gone. Another 6th and 2nd place on the last day gave him the 8th place overall....
On the foil on the other hand: Only one word describes the performance of Tycho Smits this week: PERFECTION with seven wins from seven, Tycho didn’t put a single foot wrong all week, with unbelievable speed allowing him to win races by huge distances time and time again.
September 2024 Cold Hawaii PWA Youth World Cup
Racing gets underway on day 2 in Cold Hawaii Conditions were still marginal at 7-11 knots, but finally there was enough wind to compete, and with glorious sunshine and balmy temperatures, for Cold Hawaii) it was a great day.
With the course set, the first racing heats of the event got underway at 2pm and saw some great battles across all fleets. In the U17 division, young Dane Gustav Permin claimed top honours in Elimination 1 after seeing off competition from Tycho Smith (Future Fly / NeilPryde).
Day 5 exceeded expectations and tried to make up for the previous days. The forecast was 1.4m waves, but we woke up to 2.5m and 20 to 30 knots, which presented a huge challenge for both boats and crew. The decision was made to move to Thisted, where we were rewarded with perfect fin race conditions with 18 to 25 knots. It resulted in 5 heats packed with fantastic action, high speed, and close battles between the participants in the fin category. Tycho got 2nd in the first race by 2 meter behind Storm, didn't feel well in the next two races but recovered the last two races with 2 bullets. A second place on both Foil and Fin was oké but not what he came for to Denmark.
May 2024 Bonaire PWA Youth Slalom World Cup
Bonaire was the home race for Tycho. Two weeks after the Aruba Hi-Winds the PWA tour visited our lovely island Bonaire. The races took place in Lac Bay and although Tycho always trains here with his Foil, the organization didn't think it was a good idea to foil here with lots of shallow water areas. The first day there was a perfect wind and the organization managed to run 7 eliminations. The following days the wind was just enough for racing on the Fin but the last day was unfortunately cancelled due to now wind.
It was really close with Storm Nicolai again but this event Tycho was the number one on the Fin.
May 2024 Aruba Hi Winds Youth Slalom World Cup
Aruba High-Winds is a unique events because of its size in the carribean region. A beautiful windsurf location on the blue highway, multiple disciplines like windsurfing, Windsurf foiling, Wing Foiling and kitesurfing. Every year they stand out with great coverage on livestream supported by great footage of the 'Dutch Dronegods'.
For Tycho this was his first official event on the Foil and due to the number of competitors all Foilers raced in one fleet. A first place on the Foil in his first event couldn't be better a better start.
Second place on the fin after some tough battles with Storm Nicolai was not what Tycho hoped for but it was the max this time.
